Dairy farming isn't easy at the best of times, but this year has been particularly interesting, after a cold, snowy winter, a prolonged wet spring, late turnout and most recently a hot, dry summer - grass and grazing hasn't been the best. But we are ploughing on. Most of our farmers have had to start eating into their winter forage ration. We have also had to ensure that the cows have had the chance to get out of the heat where heat-stress has been a potential threat. But, now it's getting back to normal and albeit the cows have still had the freedom to be outside, grazing and sleeping, there is a lot more grass beneath their feet - and hopefully the chance that the FRDF may be able to get another silage cut or two before the autumn/winter indoor period.
